HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – The Marshall University Baseball team faced a tough loss against the Ohio Bobcats, falling 5-3 at Jack Cook Field. With this defeat, the Herd’s record now stands at 13-14 overall and 5-4 in the Sun Belt Conference.
Coach Greg Beals expressed his disappointment. “We had a chance to bounce back after a difficult week. We didn’t play as we should have,” he said, highlighting the missed opportunity for victory.
AJ Havrilla made an impact with his fifth home run of the season, driving in two runs. Ethan Murdoch also contributed with a solid 2-for-4 performance. Meanwhile, pitchers Davis Gunn and Alex Caudill provided strong relief, keeping the Bobcats scoreless during their appearances.
The game started slowly for Marshall, as Ohio jumped ahead with two runs in the fourth and fifth innings. But things changed in the sixth when Jack Halter walked, and Havrilla tied the game with a two-run homer that smacked against the scoreboard.
Ohio quickly responded with a run in the seventh. In a dramatic moment, Mason Onate, hit by a pitch, scored after a bobble by the Bobcats on a pop-fly by Tyler Kamerer, evening the score at 3-3.
After both teams failed to score in the eighth, Ohio sealed the game with a two-run homer from Will Henson in the ninth.
As the Herd prepares for a three-game series against App State in Boone, North Carolina, the team will aim to shift their momentum.
