WHEELING – The annual Easter food distribution at Bethlehem Apostolic Church in North Wheeling is getting a boost this year. The Health Plan has stepped in as the new sponsor for this important event, which starts at 11 a.m. on Saturday at the North Wheeling Community Dream Center.
In preparation, the church is hosting a “Stuff the Bus” event on Thursday from 4-6 p.m. at Riesbeck’s in Elm Grove. Volunteers will be collecting food donations and cash contributions to support the Easter giveaway.
Jeff Knight, president and CEO of The Health Plan, stepped in after learning that Bishop Darrell Cummings and his ministry had lost their main sponsor. Knight expressed admiration for the church’s work over the past 30 years, helping struggling families in the Ohio Valley with food, clothing, and hope. “It’s time for the Ohio Valley to help Bishop Cummings and his team,” he noted.
Bishop Cummings was thankful for the support. He explained that they had been financing the event through credit cards and personal savings after losing their primary sponsor. Now, thanks to The Health Plan, they can purchase more food and supplies. “This is a miracle for us. We are very grateful,” he said.
The church typically spends between $10,000 and $12,000 for these distribution events. Although the new sponsorship helps significantly, Cummings emphasized that they still need more donations and volunteers to reach their goal. “My heart is very happy that they reached out to us. Many people care in the Ohio Valley, and that’s what makes the community great,” he added.
Historically, community support for local charities around Easter is vital. According to a 2022 survey by the National Volunteer Organization, 45% of Americans participate in some form of community service during the spring holidays. This trend highlights the spirit of giving that often revives during this season.
In addition to financial support, local businesses and residents play a crucial role in these events. Social media reactions have been overwhelmingly positive, with users praising the collaborative efforts to aid the community. As awareness grows, donations and volunteer turnout improve, directly impacting families in need.
Overall, the partnership with The Health Plan is not just about funding; it’s a community coming together to ensure that traditions like the Easter food distribution can continue thriving. It reflects a shared understanding of compassion and service that binds the Ohio Valley community.
