The University of Akron women’s basketball team celebrated four players named to the 2025-26 Women’s Basketball Academic All-MAC Team. This announcement came from the Mid-American Conference on April 2, 2026.
A total of 49 student-athletes from 13 universities earned this prestigious honor. Among them are seniors Liisa Taponen, hailing from Tampere, Finland, and Maddie Vejsicky from New Concord, Ohio. Junior Ella Wigal from Granville, Ohio, and sophomore Liz Murphy from Yackandandah, Australia, also made the list.
The Academic All-MAC award highlights athletes who balance sports with academics. To qualify, a student must maintain at least a 3.20 GPA, participate in at least half of their team’s games, and have been at their school for at least a year. Freshmen and first-year transfers are not eligible.
Here are the outstanding members of the 2025-26 Akron women’s basketball Academic All-MAC team:
- Ella Wigal, Junior, Business Administration, 4.00 GPA
- Liisa Taponen, Senior, Applied Mathematics, 3.88 GPA
- Liz Murphy, Sophomore, Sport Coaching & Athletics Leadership, 3.84 GPA
- Maddie Vejsicky, Senior, Media Studies, 3.25 GPA
Recognition like this is crucial for promoting the idea that student-athletes can excel in both their studies and sports. According to a recent survey by the NCAA, around 70% of student-athletes feel that being a student-athlete has improved their time management skills. This balance of athletics and academics can lead to personal growth and greater career prospects post-graduation.
As social media continues to buzz about these accomplishments, it’s clear that fans and students alike value the dedication these athletes show both on and off the court. These achievements inspire future student-athletes to strive for excellence, proving that hard work in the classroom can go hand in hand with dedication on the field.
