The live-action series “Dungeon Crawler Carl” is officially in the works at Peacock. This adaptation is based on the popular LitRPG book series by Matt Dinniman. Universal International Studios picked it up in early 2025, and now the project is moving forward.
Chris Yost will write and executive produce the series. Seth MacFarlane is also on board as an executive producer through his Fuzzy Door production company. Dinniman will join as an executive producer, along with Erica Huggins from Fuzzy Door. Rachel Hargreaves-Heald will oversee production.
The show has a fun and wild premise. It’s set in a world ravaged by an alien invasion, where the few human survivors must compete in a brutal intergalactic game show. The main character, Carl, finds himself partnered with his ex-girlfriend’s pampered cat, Princess Donut. Together, they face monsters and aliens as they navigate this crazy survival game—all while being filmed for TV.
Recently, Dinniman mentioned to Variety that the project was close to finalizing contracts and moving ahead.
The “Dungeon Crawler Carl” series currently has seven books, with the eighth set to come out on May 12. Dinniman plans for a total of ten books.
Fans have voiced concerns about the transition from book to screen. Dinniman reassured them, expressing trust in MacFarlane’s vision. “We won’t go forward if it’s going to look terrible,” he said. He also stated that they would test CGI for Princess Donut, ensuring a high-quality look for the series.
In recent times, adaptations of beloved book series have seen mixed reactions. While some fans eagerly await a new vision, others worry that the original magic may be lost.
As of now, the live-action “Dungeon Crawler Carl” seems to be heading in an exciting direction, promising a mix of adventure and humor with a unique premise that sets it apart from typical survival stories.
