Ten Muslim civil rights groups have come together to condemn the arrest of Salah Sarsour, a Palestinian American community leader in Wisconsin. Sarsour, who is the president of the Islamic Society of Milwaukee, was stopped by ten federal agents from Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) on March 30 while driving.
After his arrest, Sarsour was moved to a detention facility first in Illinois and then in Indiana, causing distress for his family as they struggled to find him. He has lived in the U.S. for 32 years and is a lawful permanent resident, while his wife and children hold U.S. citizenship. Since his arrest, he has remained in immigration detention.
The groups stated, “Salah is being targeted because of his Palestinian and Muslim background.” The letter was supported by well-known organizations like the Council on American-Islamic Relations and the Muslim Legal Fund of America. They pointed out that, during Donald Trump’s presidency, many immigrant activists faced deportation for their pro-Palestinian views.
“There seems to be a pattern of targeting voices that speak out against Israeli oppression,” the letter noted. The groups highlighted the troubling trend of detaining activists, linking Sarsour’s case to previous arrests of figures like Mahmoud Khalil and Leqaa Kordia, who also faced repercussions for their beliefs.
As public outrage grows, the groups have started an online campaign to help fund Sarsour’s legal defense, raising over $35,500 in a short period. The campaign reflects a larger movement against what many see as government overreach, especially how the Trump administration has treated pro-Palestinian voices.
In a recent statement, Trump described protest movements related to the Gaza conflict as “radical.” He indicated he would take steps to repress these movements if re-elected in 2024, even saying he would “set that movement back 25 or 30 years.” Shortly after taking office in 2025, he began to withdraw federal funding from universities that hosted protests and targeted individuals like Khalil and scholar Rumeysa Ozturk, who faced severe consequences for their activism.
Local leaders in Wisconsin have spoken out against Sarsour’s detention. Alderpersons JoCasta Zamarripa and Alex Bower described the situation as “a nightmare,” demanding the immediate cessation of ICE’s illegal detentions. “How dare federal agents come into our community and unlawfully detain a grandfather?” they said in a joint statement.
State Senator Chris Larson emphasized that the federal government had not publicly justified Sarsour’s arrest. He argued that targeting individuals based on their speech undermines freedoms for everyone. “These unconstitutional assaults on our freedoms should alarm all of us,” he remarked.
The situation highlights growing concerns about civil liberties in the face of political agendas. As communities rally for Sarsour’s release, this case underscores the ongoing struggle for justice and the protection of individual rights.
