Fresno State Outlasts GCU in a Close Matchup
Fresno State edged out Grand Canyon University (GCU) with a thrilling 10-8 win at Pete Beiden Field. The Lopes fought back from an early four-run deficit, showing resilience throughout the game.
GCU faced a tough start as Fresno State grabbed a quick lead, scoring five runs in the first inning. Yet, it was junior right fielder Billy Scaldeferri who sparked hope with a leadoff home run, making it 5-1. This was Scaldeferri’s second consecutive game-opening home run, a promising streak for the Lopes.
In the first inning, GCU had a moment to shine. They loaded the bases without any outs but could only push across one run. This missed opportunity loomed large when Fresno State responded strongly.
Despite being behind, the Lopes didn’t give up. They steadily chipped away at the lead, scoring runs in both the second and fourth innings. Junior Trevor Schmidt shone in the middle innings, becoming the first GCU player to hit multiple home runs in a game this season. His two solo blasts brought his season total to four in just six games.
GCU managed to tie the game in the seventh. It was a team effort, with key singles from Camden Bates, Griffin Cameron, and another from Scaldeferri loading the bases. They brought in two runs, making it 8-8.
Unfortunately for GCU, Fresno State quickly responded with a two-out double in the bottom of the seventh to reclaim the lead at 10-8. While the Lopes had a strong performance, they left 15 runners on base, a staggering number compared to Fresno State’s eight.
The top three hitters in GCU’s lineup combined for seven hits and five RBIs, showcasing their offensive capabilities. They drew seven walks and were hit by pitches three times, amassing a total of 13 hits.
GCU’s bullpen played a crucial role in stabilizing the game after a rocky start. Seniors Elijah Higginbottom and Jace Smith delivered solid scoreless outings, providing the team with a chance to fight back.
