I’ve been really into Marathon since the pre-release, sticking with my favorite Shell, Recon. In Bungie’s latest extraction shooter, Shells act like Heroes in class-based games, and Recon has often been seen as one of the weaker options. Despite this, it has unique skills, such as its ability to ping enemies. Recently, Bungie announced exciting updates for Recon as part of the mid-season patch, launching on April 14.
One key change is to Recon’s ultimate ability, Echo Pulse. This will now tell apart hostile UESC bots—computer-controlled enemies—from real players called Runners. If a Runner is using a Signal Jammer, it will appear like a UESC bot. There are also updates to how you gauge the range of an enemy Recon’s Echo Pulse, but the details are still under wraps.
Another improvement is to the Tracker Drone. This explosive spiderbot chases after hostile Runners but has had issues with getting stuck due to poor pathing. Bungie promises to enhance its tracking ability, so it’ll switch targets more effectively if its main target escapes.
As a Recon main, these changes sound promising. Previously, in tough scenarios like the Cryo Archive raid, Echo Pulse felt more confusing than helpful. The Tracker Drone, on the other hand, had potential to turn the tide but often got caught in tricky spots, wasting its utility.
So, why not switch to a different Shell? One reason is loyalty. Plus, when Recon finishes off an enemy Runner, it reveals the locations of the rest of their team, which is quite valuable. Recon also tracks enemy footsteps and notifies players when they are pinged—meaning the Shell still has some considerable benefits.
There’s more to come in the patch on April 14. Recently, Bungie addressed some existing issues in update 1.0.5.2, including fixing an exploit related to slide-cancelling. This shows Bungie’s commitment to fair play while enhancing the game.
The gaming community is buzzing with anticipation. Players are eager to see how these changes impact gameplay. For many, choosing Recon might become more than just a show of loyalty but a strategic choice.

Marathon continues to capture gamers’ attention with its immersive experience. It’s a testament to Bungie’s reputation for creating addictive gameplay and rich narratives.
