Thursday Box Office Update: ‘Super Mario Galaxy Movie’ Rakes in .6M, Soars to M in Total U.S. Earnings!

They’re back! The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is off to an exciting start, grossing $59.1 million in just two days at the domestic box office. It kicked off with a remarkable $34.5 million on Wednesday and followed with $24.6 million on Thursday as Easter weekend began.

Galaxy is doing better at the box office than the previous movie, The Super Mario Bros. Movie, which made $58.3 million in its first two days back in 2023. That film went on to become a huge hit, earning $1.36 billion globally.

Wednesday’s opening was the biggest of the year so far. It surpassed the previous record set by Project Hail Mary, which opened at $33.1 million. Galaxy has even topped the first Super Mario Bros. Movie‘s $31 million on its opening Wednesday.

Universal is projecting a five-day opening of $186 million for Galaxy, and some believe it could reach $200 million, similar to Super Mario’s impressive five-day total of $204.6 million.

Internationally, Galaxy is expected to debut with $175 million, making it the top worldwide opening of 2026 so far. Early earnings from 78 markets have brought in $33.9 million, with particularly strong numbers from Latin America.

The partnership between Universal’s Illumination and Nintendo has brought this beloved video game franchise to life. Despite mixed reviews from critics, audience scores remain high, indicating strong viewer support.

The sequel follows Mario, Luigi, and Princess Peach as they battle Bowser and his son, Bowser Jr. The adventure spans the galaxy and introduces new characters like Princess Rosalina and Yoshi.

The original voice cast is back, including Chris Pratt as Mario, Anya Taylor-Joy as Princess Peach, and Jack Black as Bowser. New additions include Benny Safdie (Bowser Jr.) and Issa Rae (Honey Queen).

Directors Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic are back for this sequel, with a script by Matthew Foget.

As of early April 3, we await more updates on how the movie continues to perform. The excitement around The Super Mario Galaxy Movie highlights the enduring popularity of the franchise and its impact on family entertainment.
