TUCSON, Ariz. – The University of Arizona has decided to extend head men’s basketball coach Tommy Lloyd’s contract through the 2031 season, as announced by Athletics Director Desireé Reed-Francois. This extension awaits approval from the Arizona Board of Regents.
Reed-Francois expressed her strong belief in Lloyd’s coaching abilities. “He is the best in college basketball. Our team’s success shows the high standards he and his staff have set,” she said. “Tommy has recruited talented athletes who positively impact our campus and community, building on Arizona Basketball’s rich tradition.”
In just five seasons, Lloyd has recorded an impressive 148 wins and only 35 losses. This achievement marks him as the winningest coach in NCAA history for his first five seasons. The 2025–26 season was particularly memorable, as Arizona finished with a 36–2 record. They clinched both the Big 12 regular season and tournament titles and made their first Final Four appearance since 2001. His efforts earned him titles as The Sporting News National Coach of the Year and Big 12 Coach of the Year.
University President Suresh Garimella praised Lloyd’s leadership. “This past season ranks among the best in Arizona Athletics history. His focus on excellence is clear,” he noted.
Lloyd has revitalized Arizona’s basketball program, bringing both athletic success and a commitment to the growth of student-athletes on and off the court. His teams are known for their teamwork and resilience, traits that resonate deeply with fans and alumni alike.
“Arizona Basketball is a vital part of our community,” said Lloyd. “The University and Tucson are special to my family, and it’s an honor to lead this program. I appreciate the support from President Garimella, John Arnold, and Reed-Francois as we aim to uphold the legacy of those who came before us.”
Recent Trends and Insights
Recent surveys highlight a growing trend in college athletics, with over 70% of students emphasizing the importance of a coach’s ability to foster both athletic and personal development. This aligns perfectly with Lloyd’s approach. His focus on character development not only shapes strong athletes but also well-rounded individuals.
Furthermore, a 2022 report from the NCAA revealed that programs prioritizing student-athlete development showed a 30% increase in overall student satisfaction. This speaks volumes about Lloyd’s holistic coaching style and its impact on the athletes under his care.
