The investigation began last Thursday. The authorities are conducting necropsies and DNA tests on the remains to uncover where these animals came from and how they ended up on the beach. Fire Chief Olivia Cole mentioned that a search team found additional carcasses, bringing the total to 21, and noted that the community is buzzing with theories.
Guemes Island, just 5 minutes by boat from the mainland, once had a unique history with the now-extinct Salish woolly dogs, earning it the nickname “Dog Island.” Today, however, the sight of skinned dogs, some without front paws and with orange twine around their necks, raises unsettling questions. Cole noted there were no visible signs of violence, like gunshot wounds, which could suggest a dogfighting ring.
Community members are shocked. Alexie Gregory, a resident of nine years, described her experience seeing the carcasses as “eerily surreal.” “I think we found a total of 10 or 11 that day, and by the end of it, I was numb,” she shared.
