TUCSON, Ariz. – The Colorado Buffaloes fell just short in a nail-biter against the Arizona Wildcats, losing 4-3 at the LaNelle Robson Tennis Center. The match showcased intense competition, especially at No. 1 singles, where Aya El Sayed faced off against Martyna Ostrzygalo, ranked No. 125 in the nation.
After a long four and a half hours, spectators witnessed a thrilling conclusion. Colorado (10-10, 2-8) initially took the doubles point, but the Wildcats quickly pulled ahead to lead 3-1. Lera Alexin and Heidi Crncan both came through with victories, tying the match at 3-3 and shifting the focus to El Sayed and Ostrzygalo.
Coach Anthony Pham praised his team. “They really fought hard today. Lera and Heidi did an amazing job,” he said.
Ostrzygalo started strong, taking the first set 7-5. However, El Sayed didn’t give up. She battled through two match points against her to claim the second set in a tiebreaker, pushing the match into a final set.
Both players exchanged momentum in the third set. El Sayed initially led 4-2, but Ostrzygalo surged back. Ultimately, both had chances to win, but it was Ostrzygalo who secured the final point, winning 7-6 (8).
“She left it all on the court,” Coach Pham reflected on El Sayed’s effort.
In doubles play, Alexin and Rixt Van der Werff set the tone early with a solid 6-2 win. However, the Wildcats claimed a crucial win in No. 3 doubles before El Sayed and Yukiko Ikedo clinched the doubles point in a tight tiebreak.
Singles play saw Arizona quickly tie the score, with Ciara Moore defeating Lani Brotman. The Wildcats then pushed their lead to 3-1 before Crncan and Alexin evened it up.
Recent statistics show that close matches like this are common in collegiate tennis, often coming down to a single match that can swing the overall outcome. This falls in line with findings from the NCAA, where competitive matches can lead to dramatic shifts in team morale and performance—as seen with Colorado’s comeback.
Looking ahead, Colorado will face No. 14 Arizona State this Sunday in what will be their final road match of the season.
In the meantime, the team has seen impressive individual accomplishments. Notably, Alexin and Van der Werff reached their 20th win together this season. El Sayed also recorded her 99th career win at Colorado, tying for a spot among the program’s best.
