The Ohio Valley Health Center recently marked an impressive 20-year milestone in providing essential healthcare to those without insurance. To celebrate, they’ll host a gala on April 26 at the St. Florian Event Center in Wintersville, themed “A Roaring 20 Years of Hope, Health, and Healing.”
Executive Director Ann Quillen expressed pride in recognizing not only the staff who have committed themselves but also the long-standing supporters who have been crucial to the center’s mission. This year, they’ll honor individuals and organizations that have contributed for over 20 years, helping those who need it most.
Last year alone, the center provided $1,755,957 in free healthcare. Curt Virtue from Value Leader Pharmacy shared his experience of being involved since the center began. He recalls how the pharmacy services have developed significantly over the years, from a small closet to filling 4,470 prescriptions valued at $531,953 last year.
Dr. Charn Nandra, the medical director, has witnessed remarkable changes too. Initially, they operated with basic tools like a stethoscope and a blood pressure cuff. He highlighted how far they’ve come, now using advanced equipment for various medical procedures. Nandra’s dedication has motivated others, including his daughter, Dr. Kamaldeep Nandra, who volunteers alongside him.
Volunteers are the backbone of the center. Dr. Tom Brown, a retired dentist, has been involved for many years, providing essential dental care and screening for patients in need. His efforts have even resulted in early cancer detection, showcasing the center’s impact on lives.
Various local churches have also played an important role, with Rev. Clint Quillen of Wintersville Methodist Church emphasizing the positive changes they aim to bring about through their support.
The center’s achievements and the dedication of its community reflect a commitment to health equity. This aligns with recent studies showing that access to free or low-cost healthcare significantly improves community well-being. According to a report by the National Association of Community Health Centers, such centers provided over $24 billion in care to underserved populations in the U.S. last year, demonstrating a similar passion for helping those in need.
The upcoming gala will not only celebrate two decades of service but also galvanize further support. Planning is in the hands of the Judy family, long-time advocates of the center who believe in its mission of serving the community. While ticket holders are encouraged to come dressed in 1920s attire, the real essence lies in the collective spirit of giving and improving lives.
As Tony Mougianis, chairman of the center’s board, noted, “When people come together, great things happen.” With ongoing outreach and community involvement, the Ohio Valley Health Center is taking significant strides to ensure healthcare accessibility continues to grow.
