More South Africans Are Coming Home: A Heartfelt Return

This “homecoming revolution” isn’t new. Good Things Guy has been highlighting this shift for some time, and the latest report backs up their findings. A survey of 173 returnees revealed that living abroad often broadens one’s perspective and fosters personal growth—scoring as high as 4.41 out of 5 on adaptability. Many see their international experience as a valuable asset when they return to South Africa.
What do returnees miss most? The answers point to simple joys: 77.46% long for time with family and friends, while 66.9% miss the warmth of South African culture. People also talk about missing the great outdoors and that deep sense of belonging found only at home.
“There’s nothing like landing at the airport and hearing our accents again. South Africa’s soul is in our language, humor, our stunning landscapes, and in our resilience. It’s irreplaceable,” shared a respondent.
Returning home isn’t just a personal journey; it also comes with new challenges. Some find that their international qualifications aren’t always recognized, which can be frustrating. However, the job market is changing. The rise of remote work allows many to continue working for international companies while enjoying a local lifestyle. This gives them the best of both worlds—global career opportunities alongside a comforting sense of community.
“For many South Africans, teaching English abroad is like a stepping stone. After gaining international experience, many return home but can still teach online,” said Rhyan O’Sullivan, Managing Director at The TEFL Academy.
Data shows a surge in returnees, with approximately 28,000 South Africans coming back in recent years. Recruitment firms note increased interest from expats thinking about returning, especially from countries like the UK, Australia, and Canada. These South Africans are not only reintegrating into their communities but also bringing valuable skills and experiences back home.
South Africa isn’t without its challenges. Yet, its beauty and complexity resonate with many who’ve traveled abroad and returned. The connections to family and friends, the vibrant culture, and the landscape create a unique sense of home. As one person put it, “South Africa may not be perfect, but it’s ours.
