Northwest Health – La Porte Celebrates National Doctors’ Day with Donation to The Pax Center

LA PORTE, IN – To mark National Doctors’ Day on March 30, Northwest Health – La Porte has made a generous $6,000 donation to The Pax Center. This local nonprofit aims to tackle food insecurity in La Porte County. This donation continues a cherished tradition where the hospital celebrates its doctors by supporting a charity chosen by its medical staff.

The funds will bolster The Pax Center’s food pantry, which has already helped over 2,100 residents this year. According to recent data, about one in eight Americans face food insecurity, a problem especially severe in rural areas like La Porte. Access to nutritious food is crucial for long-term health.

“This donation means that more families can feed their children,” explained Nate Loucks, President of The Pax Center. “Our healthcare professionals witness firsthand how hunger affects health. By choosing to support our food pantries, they’re addressing the root causes of many health issues,” he added. The center’s mission aligns seamlessly with the hospital’s vision of holistic care.

National Doctors’ Day is a time to honor the dedication of physicians who continuously serve their communities. Northwest Health’s approach reflects an evolving understanding within healthcare about the factors that influence health. Issues like food access, housing, and social support play a critical role alongside traditional medical care.

“Health is about more than what happens inside our hospital,” said Mark Casanova, CEO of Northwest Health – La Porte. “On Doctors’ Day, we give back to the community. This donation underscores our physicians’ commitment to the community’s well-being.”

Dr. Vinay Tumuluri, President of the Medical Staff, emphasized that food insecurity is not just a societal concern; it’s a health issue. “We see patients every day affected by their access to healthy food. Supporting The Pax Center allows us to honor the true spirit of medicine,” he remarked.

The Pax Center provides essential services like food pantries, community meals, and gardening programs, ensuring families have access to healthy food long-term. Their work is vital in a time when food security has become increasingly important. According to a recent Pew Research survey, discussions around food access and health continue trending on social media, highlighting how interconnected these issues are.
