GE Aerospace Partners with Indian Air Force
GE Aerospace has announced a new partnership with the Indian Air Force (IAF) to create a maintenance facility for its F404-IN20 jet engines. These engines power India’s Tejas light combat aircraft. This facility, managed by the IAF and supported by GE Aerospace, aims to boost India’s ability to maintain its defense equipment locally.
Once up and running, this facility will eliminate the need to rely on foreign repair centers. This is expected to significantly speed up repair times. GE Aerospace provides the F404-IN20 engines to Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd (HAL), which manufactures the Tejas jets.
Rita Flaherty, GE Aerospace’s Vice President, emphasized the company’s commitment to supporting India’s armed forces and enhancing local sustainability for the Tejas fleet. “This depot will help ensure that the IAF has easy access to the latest technology for its defense needs,” she stated.
However, there have been concerns about delays in delivering these jet engines to HAL. The IAF is in the process of bringing more Tejas jets into service. In February 2021, the Indian government signed a substantial deal for 83 Tejas Mk-1A jets. Recently, another agreement for 97 Mk-1A jets was finalized at a cost of Rs 62,370 crore.
The Tejas jets play a crucial role in the IAF’s operations. They are designed for air defense, maritime surveillance, and strike missions. The IAF currently has 29 fighter squadrons, but the ideal number is 42.
GE Aerospace is not only focused on aircraft but also invests in India’s aviation ecosystem. The company claims that its educational programs have prepared 150 engineers through its Edison Engineering Development Programme. Over 5,000 individuals have gained manufacturing skills through training initiatives at their Pune factory.
Additionally, in partnership with United Way, the GE Aerospace Foundation launched the Next Engineers program in Bengaluru. This initiative aims to equip 4,000 young engineering students with the skills they need for their futures.
Beyond the Tejas, GE Aerospace engines are also found in the Indian Navy’s P-8I maritime patrol aircraft and MH60R helicopters. Their technology powers the IAF’s AH-64 Apache helicopter and the INS Vikrant aircraft carrier.
With these efforts, GE Aerospace firmly places itself at the forefront of India’s evolving defense landscape, ensuring that both personnel and technology are ready for the future.
