The Duquesne University acrobatics and tumbling team has made history by qualifying for the 2026 National Collegiate Acrobatics & Tumbling Association (NCATA) National Championships in Azusa, California. This milestone comes just in their second season of competition.
The Dukes, ranked No. 9 in the regular-season poll, achieved a program record with a score of 263.400, which helped them clinch the final spot for the national championships. Under the leadership of coach Michaela Soper, the team has shown impressive talent and determination.
Throughout the season, Duquesne faced tough competition, including four teams in the top 10, and finished with a balanced record of 3-3. They were particularly strong at home, winning all three matches at UPMC Cooper Fieldhouse. One standout moment was defeating then-No. 10 Azusa Pacific.
In addition to this victory, Duquesne also exceeded the 260 mark in two matches, highlighting their consistent improvement. Their overall average score this season was 257.912, with the last performance significantly raising their average to secure their championship berth.
The NCATA Championships evaluate teams based on various factors, such as win-loss records, strength of schedule, and performance progression. Duquesne will face No. 1 Baylor in the quarterfinals on April 23 at 10:00 p.m. ET.
Acrobatics and tumbling has been growing in popularity since its creation in 2009, blending gymnastics, cheerleading, and athleticism. Recently, it transitioned from an NCAA Emerging Sport to an NCAA Championship Sport. This change marks a significant step for the sport as it prepares for its first National Collegiate Championship in 2027, with over 1,300 athletes participating across 52 NCAA programs.
