One crucial food program in Pend Oreille County is struggling financially. Youth Emergency Services (YES) needs more funding to continue providing food for young people. Currently, they have only $1,050, which is about half of what they spend monthly on weekend food bags for local youth, mainly students from Newport School District.
YES started this weekend food program in March 2021 with funding from the pandemic relief package. Now, as that funding has ended, they rely on sporadic donations and grants. Even though they receive about $500 in donations monthly, it’s not enough. Executive Assistant Paula Martin mentioned that applying for grants has been tough, as many are highly competitive.
The food program has a significant impact on young people dealing with food insecurity. Each bag contains meals and snacks to support them through the weekend. About 252 bags go to Newport students, costing roughly $7.42 each. In the first quarter of 2026, they will spend over $6,200 just to keep this service running.
Executive Director Kellie Dean emphasizes the connection between nutrition and education. When kids don’t have enough to eat, it directly affects their ability to focus in school. “If you’re hungry, you’re not paying attention,” she explains. Poor nutrition can lead to lower grades, creating a cycle that can hinder their future.
YES also provides snacks every day for kids who need them. “We don’t deny any kid food,” said YES Advocate Kaileyann Saunders. Families often struggle, and these small acts of kindness can mean a lot.
Supporting this program doesn’t require large donations. Martin pointed out that just $37 can fund five bags of food. Even small contributions are welcome and can create a meaningful impact.
As communities face ongoing economic challenges, initiatives like YES are vital for ensuring that no young person goes hungry. Through community support, such programs can continue to thrive and make a real difference in the lives of those who need it most.
