Phil Collins, already in the Hall as part of Genesis, is now honored for his solo work. His hits in the ’80s, like “In the Air Tonight,” made him a pop-rock sensation. Collins introduced the “gated snare” technique, giving his songs a powerful, distinctive sound. His contributions to music have earned him an Academy Award for the beloved track “You’ll Be In My Heart” from Disney’s Tarzan.
Billy Idol joins the Hall after a long career that began in the punk rock scene. His songs “Rebel Yell” and “Dancing with Myself” still resonate with fans today, demonstrating his lasting impact on rock music.
Heavy metal fans will welcome Iron Maiden’s induction this year. Known for their anthemic storytelling and memorable mascot, Eddie, the band has shaped the genre since the ’80s. Their music continues to attract a dedicated following.
Joy Division and New Order, entering the Hall together, have a shared history. Joy Division’s moody sound thrived under the late Ian Curtis’s haunting vocals, while New Order shifted to a more dance-oriented vibe after his passing. Their evolution showcases the profound impact both bands have had on music.
Oasis can also celebrate their status as Hall inductees. The Britpop phenomenon, led by siblings Liam and Noel Gallagher, continues to enjoy renewed interest, especially after a recent reunion tour that captivated fans on both sides of the Atlantic.
Sade, the English band fronted by Sade Adu, changed the landscape of ’80s and ’90s music with their unique blend of jazz, soul, and R&B. Their smooth, timeless sound influenced modern artists like Drake and Adele.
Luther Vandross, whose powerful voice shaped the R&B genre, rises to prominence in the Hall. After beginning as a background vocalist, his solo career took off, leading to collaborations with stars like Whitney Houston and Aretha Franklin. His music continues to inspire artists today, including Kendrick Lamar.
Finally, Wu-Tang Clan marks the Hall’s recognition of hip-hop’s role in the music landscape. With a unique blend of humor and cultural references, their contributions to the genre are undeniable.
In addition to performers, several special awards will be given this year. Celia Cruz, known as The Queen of Salsa, becomes the first primarily Spanish-language artist inducted, while Fela Kuti is recognized for helping create the Afrobeat genre.
Queen Latifah and MC Lyte are celebrated for paving the way for women in hip-hop, while Gram Parsons is finally honored for his influence on country rock, previously overlooked during his career.
The induction ceremony is set for November 14 at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles, with a broadcast planned for December on ABC and Disney+.
