This year, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame will welcome a stellar group of musicians. Phil Collins, Iron Maiden, Billy Idol, Queen Latifah, Oasis, Sade, Joy Division, and Wu-Tang Clan are among the nominees. The late Luther Vandross is also recognized posthumously.
The announcement came during an episode of American Idol. To be eligible, artists must have released their first music at least 25 years ago. Over 1,200 industry professionals voted on this year’s nominees.
Phil Collins, who is already a Hall of Famer as part of Genesis, has hits like “In the Air Tonight” and “One More Night.” He has won eight Grammys, including Album of the Year for “No Jacket Required” in 1985.
Sade, nominated for her smooth hits like “Smooth Operator,” also joins the pack. Wu-Tang Clan is celebrated for revolutionizing hip-hop with their iconic 1993 album, “Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers).” Iron Maiden has had previous nominations and is known for their influence on the heavy metal scene, especially with “The Number of the Beast.”
Luther Vandross, who passed away in 2005, has sold over 25 million albums and inspired many contemporary artists. Kendrick Lamar and SZA even referenced him in their song “Luther.”
The Hall is also highlighting the sounds of Manchester this year. Joy Division and New Order, which feature many of the same members, will be inducted, along with Britpop legends Oasis. Billy Idol, known for tracks like “White Wedding,” has his own punk-pop flair.
The induction ceremony is set for November 14 at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles.
Notably, some big names didn’t make the list this year. Mariah Carey, Lauryn Hill, and Pink are among the nominees who will have to wait for another chance.
In addition to performers, the Hall of Fame recognizes contributions across three special categories. Queen Latifah will be honored in the early influence category, alongside Cuban singer Celia Cruz and Nigerian musician Fela Kuti. The musical excellence category features notable figures like songwriter Linda Creed and producer Rick Rubin.
Lastly, Ed Sullivan, the legendary TV host, will be inducted with the Ahmet Ertegun Non-Performer Award. His show was a major platform for many iconic musicians in the 1950s and 1960s and played a significant role in advancing diversity in American entertainment.
As we look at this year’s nominees, it’s clear that the musical landscape continues to evolve, showcasing a rich tapestry of past and present influences in rock and pop culture.
