SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — A serious incident involving artificial intelligence has caught public attention. Authorities say 20-year-old Daniel Moreno-Gama traveled from Texas to San Francisco, intending to harm OpenAI CEO Sam Altman. He allegedly threw a Molotov cocktail at Altman’s home early Friday morning, igniting a fire before fleeing on foot. Shortly after, he went to OpenAI’s headquarters and threatened to burn it down.
Moreno-Gama is reportedly against artificial intelligence, claiming it poses risks to humanity. In a document found by authorities, he expressed fears about “our impending extinction” due to AI.
“This was not spontaneous. This was planned, targeted and extremely serious,” said Matt Cobo, FBI San Francisco Acting Special Agent in Charge. Fortunately, no injuries occurred during these events.
Moreno-Gama faces multiple charges, including attempted murder and attempted arson. These charges carry severe penalties, with state convictions potentially leading to life in prison. He has also been charged federally for possession of an unregistered firearm and destruction of property, which could add significant prison time.
Authorities found him with incendiary devices and noted that he had traveled specifically to confront Altman. Surveillance footage captured him approaching Altman’s residence and throwing the cocktail, while other videos from OpenAI’s office showed him attempting to break in.
