The Arkansas State Red Wolves clinched a solid win against the Southern Illinois University (SIU) Salukis, finishing 11-5 in a game that showcased powerful batting.
In the second inning, A-State took control with two big hits: a three-run homer from Patrick Engskov and a three-run double from Evan Griffis, pushing the score to 6-0. Ckyler Tengler and Jelle Van Der Lelie held the Salukis scoreless for the first four innings.
Griffis extended the Red Wolves’ lead with another home run. SIU finally got on the scoreboard thanks to Mason Schwalbach, who hit a two-run homer in the sixth inning. Kye Watson almost followed suit but ended up with a triple, later scoring on a sacrifice fly by Henry Kufa.
A-State sealed the deal with three additional runs in the seventh and eighth innings, bringing their total to 11. In the bottom of the ninth, Xavier Farnum hit his first home run of the season, adding two runs for the Salukis.
Engskov and Griffis played a significant role, accounting for 10 of the 11 runs. On the mound, Dylan Petrey, Gio de Graauw, Nolan Hand, and Tyson Greene threw scoreless innings for SIU, but it wasn’t enough to turn the tide.
Looking ahead, SIU will face Bradley in a three-game series starting Friday in Peoria.
