The Illinois Extension is bringing back its Summer Twilight Series, a beloved event in southern Illinois that connects farmers and community members. This program is all about sharing ideas and learning together in a relaxed, evening setting.
The Summer Twilight Series is rooted in a simple tradition: farmers gather after a long day to discuss what works and what doesn’t. This series expands that idea, offering on-site educational experiences at working farms. Participants can tour various operations, see how things are done, and meet directly with farmers and Extension educators.
In 2026, there will be four events throughout the growing season. Each one highlights different farming practices, marketing strategies, and innovative methods shaping the local agricultural scene. These sessions also offer fantastic networking opportunities for local entrepreneurs, helping them collaborate and strengthen the region’s food systems.
Here are the details for the upcoming sessions, all scheduled from 6 to 8 p.m. on Monday nights:
May 18: Flower Girls Greenhouse, Richview, IL – Covering cut flowers, bedding plants, and hanging baskets.
June 22: Edmison Acres and Highland Cattle, Johnsonville, IL – Focused on farm marketing and managing Highland cows.
July 20: Pink Tiger Farm, Goreville, IL – Exploring value-added products like ginger, turmeric, and peppers.
August 17: Friendly Farms, Eddyville, IL – Featuring mums and pumpkins.
Attendance is free, but you must register beforehand. You can do so online or by calling the Extension office.
Recent studies show that farmer-to-farmer networking is critical for success in modern agriculture. A report from the USDA found that collaborative farming practices lead to increased production and sustainability.
This series is not just about learning; it’s about building a community. With a mix of hands-on experiences and shared knowledge, participants leave better prepared to tackle challenges in their own farms.
