At NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida, Rebekah Tolatovicz is making history. As a mechanical technician lead with ASRC Federal, she’s a vital part of the Orion spacecraft team, which supports Lockheed Martin. Her daily routine involves assembling and testing spacecraft for future Artemis missions, including the recent Artemis II test flight.
Tolatovicz explains how her job covers a wide range of tasks. “We start with a bare structure and add huge titanium parts until everything is integrated down to the smallest components. It’s a mix of everything, and that’s what I love,” she says.
The Artemis II mission was a significant milestone, as it was the first crewed flight in NASA’s Artemis program. It carried four astronauts around the Moon and splashed down on April 10. Tolatovicz played a key role in integrating and testing the Orion crew modules, which are designed to support astronauts on future missions.
Having started as an intern through a local aerospace technician program, Tolatovicz knows the value of mentorship. Early on, she was guided by seasoned technicians from the space shuttle era. “I thought I might not make it,” she recalls. “But with a positive attitude and a desire to learn, I realized I could navigate the challenges.”
Historically, the Orion program reflects a broader trend in space exploration. This effort marks a return to crewed lunar missions after the Apollo program ended more than 50 years ago. According to NASA, Artemis aims to land the first woman and the next man on the Moon by 2024, paving the way for future missions to Mars.
Recent statistics show increasing interest in STEM careers among women, with nearly 30% of the workforce in aerospace being female today, compared to just 10% in the early 1980s. Tolatovicz is among those trailblazers, inspiring a new generation of engineers and technicians. As she notes, “It’s incredible to play a part in NASA’s history and future.”
