BUDAPEST, Hungary (AP) — Hungarian opposition leader Péter Magyar has some big news. After winning a stunning two-thirds majority in the recent elections with his Tisza party, he announced on Wednesday that President Tamás Sulyok assured him that his new government could take power in the first week of May. This brings an end to Prime Minister Viktor Orbán’s lengthy 16-year rule sooner than expected.
Magyar met with Sulyok, who confirmed that he would nominate Magyar as the new prime minister. They tentatively planned the inaugural parliamentary session for May 6 or 7. Magyar stated, “Everyone believes it’s in Hungary’s interest to make this change quickly after such a strong voter mandate.”
One of Magyar’s top priorities is restructuring the government. He plans to establish new ministries for health, environmental protection, and education—areas that were neglected under Orbán.
In his first broadcast appearance in nearly two years, Magyar discussed reforming Hungary’s public broadcaster. He criticized it for being a propaganda tool for Orbán’s Fidesz party and announced plans to suspend its news programming until it can operate independently and objectively. “This factory of lies will come to an end,” he pledged.
Magyar is also urging Orbán’s government to act responsibly during its remaining time in office, avoiding decisions that could harm Hungary’s interests. He has suggested that Sulyok resign after the new government is formed, expressing doubt about Sulyok’s ability to represent the unity of the nation.
With the Tisza party now holding a supermajority in parliament, they have the power to alter the constitution and reverse many of Orbán’s policies. The potential for change is significant, drawing the attention of both citizens and international observers.
