Get Ready to Laugh: ‘Spaceballs 2’ Trailer Takes on ‘Star Wars,’ ‘Avatar,’ and Hollywood Mergers in Side-Splitting Sequel ‘The New One’

Mel Brooks is back in the spotlight with a fun twist! Although the 99-year-old comedy legend couldn’t attend CinemaCon in Las Vegas, he sent a vibrant video sharing exciting news about his long-awaited sequel to “Spaceballs.” Titled “Spaceballs: The New One,” the film aims to continue the laughter from the beloved original.

The cast is a delightful mix of old and new. Rick Moranis returns as the hilarious Lord Dark Helmet, with Daphne Zuniga as Princess Vespa and Bill Pullman as Lone Starr. Also joining the fun are Josh Gad, Keke Palmer, Lewis Pullman, and Anthony Carrigan, who will introduce fresh characters. The details about their roles are still under wraps, adding an air of mystery.

At CinemaCon, Moranis, Zuniga, and the Pullmans presented a lively trailer, packed with clever parodies of movie favorites like “Star Wars,” “Avatar,” and “Harry Potter.” The opening even features a homage to “The Force Awakens,” complete with robots and explorers navigating a desert, plus a funny nod to Han Solo in carbonite. One standout gag has Lord Dark Helmet encountering a Na’vi while at a urinal!

Amazon MGM is keeping the sequel’s plot tightly guarded, teasing that it will once again be set in a galaxy far, far away, poking fun at other massive sci-fi franchises like “Star Trek” and “Alien.” The director, Josh Greenbaum, is known for his quirky humor from films like “Barb and Star Go to Vista Del Mar.” The screenplay was crafted by Gad, Benji Samit, and Dan Hernandez.

“Spaceballs: The New One” is set to hit theaters on April 23, 2027. In a clever throwback, Brooks previously hinted at the sequel with a “Star Wars” style crawl, humorously commenting on the endless iterations of trilogies in Hollywood.

With his signature wit and a talented ensemble, this sequel promises to deliver the laughs that fans have cherished for decades. Mel Brooks has always been a master of comedy, and it’s exciting to see what new adventures await in this beloved universe.
