KYIV, Ukraine (AP) — Russia unleashed a fierce attack on Ukraine, launching nearly 700 drones and several missiles, striking civilian neighborhoods for hours. Tragically, at least 16 people lost their lives, and over 100 were injured as residents sought refuge in their homes.
Tetiana Sokol, a Kyiv resident, described the horror. “Missiles hit near my home. I grabbed my dog and ran for cover. Windows shattered, and we were in shock,” she shared. She’s still looking for her cats, lost in the chaos.
Since its all-out invasion began over four years ago, Russian forces have consistently targeted civilians, resulting in over 15,000 Ukrainian deaths, according to the United Nations. The recent assault was characterized by a high use of ballistic missiles. Yuriy Ihnat, from the Ukrainian Air Force, emphasized that only advanced systems like the U.S. Patriot can effectively counter such strikes. “We need more missiles for the Patriot systems,” he stressed.
The Russian Defense Ministry claimed the attack was revenge for Ukrainian strikes on targets inside Russia. However, European Council President António Costa condemned the attack, calling it “yet another horrendous act.”
In the wake of this assault, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has been actively seeking stronger air defense systems. His recent trip to Germany, Norway, and Italy focused on securing more support. Despite Ukraine’s advancements in drone technology, it still lacks the sophisticated air defense systems needed to fully protect its skies.
In light of the recent violence, Zelenskyy has highlighted the need for urgent military support from international partners. Last month marked the largest drone assault to date, with 948 drones deployed and 34 missiles fired in just 24 hours. Analysts suggest that this pattern of intense bombardment reflects a strategic shift in Russia’s approach, focusing more on civilian infrastructure as opposed to military targets.
In other areas affected, casualties included four people, including a 12-year-old, in Kyiv. Odesa reported nine deaths, while Dnipro and Zaporizhzhia also faced tragic losses. Ukraine’s Foreign Minister, Andrii Sybiha, remarked on the gravity of these attacks, calling them war crimes that must be addressed.
Meanwhile, in Russia, casualties were reported in the southern port of Tuapse, highlighting the ongoing conflict’s widespread impacts. While Russia’s Defense Ministry claimed their defenses shot down 207 Ukrainian drones overnight, the cycle of violence shows little sign of stopping.
