Iron Galaxy Reduces Workforce: What This Means for Employees and the Future of the Company

Iron Galaxy Studios, known for developing titles like Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 3+4, has announced layoffs as part of a significant reduction in its workforce. The Chicago-based studio shared the news on LinkedIn, expressing regret over the loss of “teammates and friends” due to changes in company structure. They acknowledged adapting to current market conditions as a necessary step.

The gaming industry has faced challenging circumstances, with many studios cutting staff or closing since mid-2022. This trend continues, underscoring the evolving landscape of game development. In 2022, Iron Galaxy even opened a Nashville office, investing nearly $1 million and promising to create 108 jobs, a stark contrast to their current situation.

In 2023, Iron Galaxy’s original game Rumbleverse was shut down just six months after launch. Since then, the studio has shifted focus toward co-development projects and game ports, like The Last of Us Part I to PC. They have also released Deathtrap Dungeon as part of Fortnite’s UEFN experiences.

In their announcement, Iron Galaxy stated, “Players consume games in new ways. Publishers have different criteria for investing in game development.” This reflects a broader trend since the pandemic, as gaming habits have transformed markedly, with players gravitating toward newer formats and experiences.

Industry experts point out that these changes may be permanent. According to a report by the International Game Developers Association, over 40% of game developers have experienced layoffs in their careers. As predicted, the industry may see even more restructuring in the coming years.

In a worrying trend, Iron Galaxy laid off 66 employees in 2025 in a bid to save costs. This recent round of layoffs further highlights the ongoing uncertainties in the gaming world. How companies respond to these challenges will shape the industry’s future.
