Valerie Bertinelli Encourages Drew Barrymore to Embrace Her Emotions: No Need to Apologize!

Valerie Bertinelli is showing her support for Drew Barrymore and her warm personality. On a recent episode of The Drew Barrymore Show, the trio, including Ross Mathews, discussed a 2017 Wired article about how human touch can boost happiness and reduce stress.

Drew admitted, “I may or may not have brought this story to the news desk because I’m known to glom on to other humans.” As she hugged Bertinelli and later Mathews, she added, “I also just may not be your cup of tea and you may not want at all to be touched. And I’m so sorry for that.”

Bertinelli quickly jumped in, encouraging Drew not to apologize for being herself. “Do not apologize for being so authentic,” she said, holding Drew’s hand. “Touch is what keeps us connected. You are here on this Earth to communicate and touch.”

Mathews also reassured Drew. “It’s so authentically you,” he remarked, emphasizing that she couldn’t change her nature even if she wanted to. Barrymore acknowledged that her touchy nature might not appeal to everyone, but she felt relieved to hear about the positive effects of touch.

Throughout her talk show, Drew has faced both praise and criticism for her affectionate style, which includes holding hands and hugging guests. Recently, she mentioned that she’s trying to be more mindful of personal space during interviews.

In a conversation with Wicked star Cynthia Erivo, Drew revealed she had been advised to tone down her physical closeness. Erivo offered an insightful perspective, suggesting that much of the discomfort with touch stems from fear. “I think we assume that physical connection can only be romantic,” she explained, adding that we often underestimate the importance of physical communication among friends.

The Drew Barrymore Show airs on CBS weekdays. Be sure to check local listings for times.
