India recently expressed its support for the ceasefire between Israel and Lebanon. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) emphasized its backing for efforts that promote regional stability.
In a press briefing, MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal highlighted the importance of peaceful negotiations. This truce came into effect on Thursday and signals a potential diplomatic shift. U.S. President Donald Trump is reportedly trying to arrange a historic meeting between leaders from Israel and Lebanon, which hasn’t happened in 44 years.
The ceasefire is linked to a broader initiative by the U.S. to resolve tensions with Iran, which insists that a truce involving Lebanon must be part of any agreement. When asked about Pakistan’s role in the peace talks, Jaiswal stated that India is closely monitoring the developments in the region.
The conflict escalated significantly on February 28 when the U.S. and Israel launched attacks against Iran. Just a few days later, Hezbollah from Lebanon retaliated with rocket attacks on Israel. Despite ongoing tensions, Trump voiced hope that Hezbollah would act responsibly during this critical time.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu confirmed that Israeli forces would maintain a security zone to prevent infiltration. He stated that the goals include disarming Hezbollah and establishing a sustainable peace from a position of strength.
Though there was a ceasefire, the situation remains unstable. Reports from Lebanon indicate that Israeli artillery shelled villages shortly after the truce began. Yet, in Beirut, some celebrated the ceasefire with fireworks, hoping it leads to a lasting peace agreement.
India has actively worked to evacuate its citizens from the region. Since the beginning of the conflict, it successfully brought back 2,361 people, including students, fishermen, and others. Jaiswal noted the collaboration with Armenia and Azerbaijan to facilitate this process.
On April 11, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar announced the evacuation of an additional 312 Indian fishermen through Armenia, thanking the Armenian government for their support.
As we reflect on the historical context, this ceasefire stands out in recent diplomatic efforts. In April 2023, high-level peace talks mediated by Pakistan attempted to end a prolonged conflict between the U.S. and Iran. These talks marked a significant moment since the 1979 Islamic Revolution that altered the region’s political landscape.
The fluctuating dynamics of the West Asia region have always drawn international scrutiny. Countries like India are keenly aware of their interests and national sovereignty. Jaiswal reaffirmed India’s position on various issues, including its commitment to climate change despite withdrawing from certain international forums.
