Severe Storms Hit Chicago Area: What You Need to Know
Severe storms are making their way toward the Chicago area, prompting a tornado watch that covers many counties until late tonight. Areas like Boone, DeKalb, LaSalle, and Cook are on high alert as these storms could bring damaging winds, hail, and possible tornadoes.
As of now, multiple tornado warnings are in effect. Parts of LaSalle and Lake County need to stay vigilant until 9 p.m., while areas in DeKalb and McHenry are warned until about 9:15 p.m. There’s also a severe thunderstorm warning impacting several counties, which could create strong, damaging winds.
Earlier today, storms in northwestern Illinois veered north and didn’t fully hit Chicago but did cause a tornado in Lena, about 47 miles west of Rockford. This tornado reportedly damaged local schools, raising concerns for student safety. In Machesney Park, residents shared photos of funnel clouds as the storms passed.
The winds from the approaching storm could reach up to 70 miles per hour. Experts say that the later round of storms—expected around 8 p.m.—poses the highest risk for tornadoes, particularly in the western suburbs. This round of storms will also likely drop 1 to 3 inches of rain, heightening flood risks for the region.
Flood watches are in effect for the entire area, with additional warnings for flash floods in Boone, Lake, and McHenry counties. Already, local rivers like the Des Plaines and Fox are facing rising waters due to previous rainfall, which will only worsen with tonight’s storms.
Interestingly, the National Weather Service reports that over 51 million people across states from Texas to Wisconsin are currently under severe weather warnings. Communities need to stay informed as conditions change.
