Upbeat claims from President Trump about a potential peace deal with Iran were met with skepticism in the Middle East. Both Iranian and Israeli officials doubted whether an agreement could satisfy all parties.
Trump suggested that the Strait of Hormuz was “fully open” and insisted Iran wouldn’t regain control over it. However, Iranian officials stated that conditions for passage still existed, including tolls and coordination with their military. They warned that the waterway could be closed again unless the U.S. lifted its port blockade, which Trump said would remain.
An Iranian aide dismissed Trump’s comments as “baseless.” They emphasized that Iran’s partial reopening was a test of the U.S.’s commitments. If promises were broken, there would be consequences.
In a gesture toward Iran, Trump announced that Israel would not conduct further military strikes in Lebanon. However, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu only confirmed a temporary ceasefire. Members of Netanyahu’s Cabinet warned that military operations in southern Lebanon might continue, with some claiming Trump risked giving in to Iran.
Domestic reactions have been mixed. While many Americans are tired of a long war, Republican allies of Trump are cautioning against making a deal that favors Iran. Senator Lindsey Graham stated confidence that Trump wouldn’t allow Iran to profit significantly from negotiations.
Recently, reports emerged that Trump’s team might have offered $20 billion in frozen assets in exchange for Iran’s fissile material. This figure is much larger than what was released to Iran under the 2015 nuclear deal. Trump denied these claims, insisting that he wouldn’t provide Iran with a financial windfall.
Trump expressed optimism about reaching a deal soon, claiming Iran agreed to end uranium enrichment. If true, this would mark a substantial shift for Iran, which had recently rejected a longer pause on enrichment.
However, Iranian state media stated the proposal to remove enriched uranium had been “rejected.” Tensions remain high as Israel’s military holds positions in southern Lebanon, susceptible to attacks from Hezbollah militants if fighting resumes.
An Iranian official pointed out that a possible extension of the ceasefire could lead to more talks about lifting sanctions and compensation for war damages. It remains uncertain what will happen next, but the conversation continues.
Despite the optimism, a history of failed negotiations looms. For context, the 2015 nuclear deal sparked intense debate, with many viewing it as inadequate. Today’s situation showcases challenges that may make any agreement even trickier than before.
The talks are set to continue over the weekend, and Trump stated that the U.S. blockade will end only once a formal agreement is reached. Whether this deal will achieve lasting peace is yet to be seen.
