Oklahoma Tennis Team Battles Texas A&M in SEC Championships
In a tightly contested match at the SEC Championships, the Oklahoma men’s tennis team faced off against Texas A&M. The Sooners, seeded fourth, fought hard but fell short, losing 4-3 in the quarterfinals.
The team started on the back foot by losing the doubles point. However, they quickly rallied in singles play, winning three first sets. Johan Rodriguez was the first to finish, securing a solid victory at 6-1, 6-4 to level the match.
Unfortunately, the Aggies then pulled ahead. Alejandro Melero struggled in his match, losing in three sets. Asahi Harazaki also faced challenges, losing his sets as well. The Sooners found themselves down 1-3.
But Oklahoma wasn’t done yet. Luis Alvarez, ranked 35th, made a strong comeback against the 10th-ranked Theo Papamalamis. After losing their previous encounter, Alvarez won 6-3, 7-6(7), narrowing the gap to 2-3. Orel Kimhi followed suit, bouncing back from a first-set loss and taking his match 6-7(8), 6-1, 6-3, tying it up at 3-3.
The final showdown came down to Oscar Lacides against Kholo Montsi. Lacides dropped the first set but pushed back to win the second in a tiebreak. Despite his effort, he ultimately lost the decider, sealing Oklahoma’s fate at 4-3.
Looking forward, the Sooners are set to learn their fate for the NCAA Championships during the Selection Show on April 27 at 4 p.m. CT.
