India has expressed serious concern over a recent incident in the Strait of Hormuz. Two Indian-flagged vessels carrying crude oil had to turn back after coming under fire from Iranian military forces. This situation has prompted the Indian government to summon Iran’s envoy to express dissatisfaction about the attack.
Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri met with Iranian Ambassador Mohammad Fathali. He emphasized the importance of the safety of merchant ships and sailors. Misri reminded the ambassador that Iran had previously ensured safe passage for vessels heading to India.
The Strait of Hormuz is crucial for global oil transport, carrying about one-fifth of the world’s oil supply. Tensions escalated after a US and Israeli attack on Iran about six weeks ago, leading to a halt in traffic through this vital waterway. Following Iran’s announcement that it had reopened the strait for commercial vessels, oil prices have surged significantly due to the uncertainty.
However, just a day after reopening, Iran closed the waterway again, citing violations of prior agreements by the US. This back-and-forth has made navigation through the strait fraught with danger.
In response, the Foreign Secretary conveyed India’s views and urged Iran to quickly facilitate the safe passage of its ships. The Iranian ambassador promised to relay this message to Tehran.
External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar recently highlighted India’s strong stance on ensuring safe maritime transit. He stated that any attacks on merchant shipping are “completely unacceptable.”
This incident resonates with a broader trend of increasing conflict over shipping routes. According to recent data from the International Maritime Organization, such confrontations have raised alarm among shipping companies worldwide. Many are calling for enhanced protection for commercial vessels in troubled areas like the Strait of Hormuz.
