La Salle Baseball Faces Tough Loss Against Fordham
La Salle’s baseball team struggled on Saturday at Hank DeVincent Field, losing both games of a doubleheader to Fordham. The scores were 5-4 in the first game and 10-3 in the second.
In Game 1, La Salle fell behind early, trailing 4-0. They fought back but couldn’t seal the deal. Despite loading the bases in the bottom of the ninth, they couldn’t score the tying run, ending the game with potential on the line.
Rueben Livingston kicked off La Salle’s scoring with a solo home run, a big hit that energized the team in the seventh inning. Carter Groen also shined by knocking in his 54th RBI of the season, leading the Atlantic 10.
As the game progressed, the Explorers chipped away at the Fordham lead, taking advantage of two costly Rams errors to score three runs in the eighth. However, Fordham’s Josh Beck kept La Salle at bay, shutting them down in the ninth inning.
Owen MacDonnell pitched well for La Salle, striking out five in 5.2 innings and allowing only two earned runs.
Game 2 Recap
Game 2 told a different story. La Salle started strong, leading 1-0 and briefly at 2-1. But in a dramatic turn, Fordham unleashed six runs in the third inning, shifting momentum completely. They pulled ahead to a dominating 10-2 lead by the seventh inning.
Chase Swain managed to hit a solo home run in the seventh, adding to his already impressive season stats. With five triples this season, he ranks first in the Atlantic 10 for that category. Groen also showed his value with an RBI in this match, maintaining his lead in the league for RBIs (55).
Despite these efforts, La Salle couldn’t regain control, and Fordham secured a series sweep.
Looking Ahead
Statistically, La Salle has had ups and downs this season. Their batting average, particularly from players like Swain and Groen, shows promise. As they prepare for their next game against Manhattan University, scheduled for April 21, there’s hope that they can build on these strengths and turn their fortunes around.
This series highlights the unpredictability of college baseball. Each game offers a chance for teams to learn and evolve, and La Salle will aim to bounce back stronger in the next match.
