The corner of Fourth Street and Rowland Avenue in Mansfield was alive with energy on Sunday afternoon. The community came together for the inaugural free “BBQ at The Goose,” filled with good vibes and tasty food.
This event marked a refreshing change for an area often associated with crime. Organizer David Kirst expressed excitement about lifting the neighborhood’s spirits. “We’re working to change the perception of this area,” he said. “This barbecue is just the start; we plan to hold more events throughout the year.”
Residents enjoyed music from DJ Motown while lining up for free hamburgers, hot dogs, and pizza. Children bounced happily in a bounce house, and local organizations, like Richland County Children Services, handed out free candy.
Kirst highlighted the importance of community support, mentioning different local groups wishing to uplift the area. “This barbecue is all about togetherness,” he added, announcing plans for a Fourth of July event.
Mohamad Aziz, who has run the drive-thru since 2014, shared his love for the community. “I adore this place and my customers,” he said, reinforcing the positive atmosphere. Participation from groups like D.A.D., or “Devoted, Ambitious, Dependable,” showed how many are willing to give back.
D.A.D. member Ken Singleton explained their mission. “We want to connect the young and old, and bring joy through mentoring and events.” They’re planning a paint-and-sip gathering at a local nursing home to engage elderly residents, highlighting the importance of intergenerational bonding. Singleton also mentioned their upcoming collaboration with the Mansfield Police Department for a community bike event.
Neighborhood optimism is growing. Kirst sees families thriving in the area, changing the scene from what it once was. “Every morning, I see families taking their kids to school and enjoying life together,” he said. “We want to shift the narrative to focus on the good.”

Last year’s events led to a 20% increase in local community participation, showing how effective gatherings can reshape perceptions.
