How I Found Joy in Unretirement: At 82, I’m Living My Dream as a Pickleball Coach!

This story is about Robert Warden, an 82-year-old pickleball coach from Utah. Robert’s journey is a powerful reminder of how it’s never too late to change your life.

In 2016, after retiring from a fulfilling career as a chef on a shopping network, Robert looked forward to relaxation and tennis. However, by age 75, he faced serious health issues, including degenerative disc disease, prediabetes, sleep apnea, and high blood pressure—all while weighing 265 pounds. His doctor urged him to swim three times a week. After some hesitation, Robert took the plunge. Though the first lap was tough, he soon found himself swimming a mile every day.

But swimming wasn’t the only change. Robert adopted a Mediterranean diet and reduced alcohol intake. He felt stronger and more energetic, which inspired him to hike regularly, aiming for over 15,000 steps daily.

When he could no longer find tennis partners, Robert joined a local pickleball club. He quickly fell in love with the sport and started coaching after completing a six-month training program. Now, he’s the oldest coach at the club, dedicating 3 to 4 hours most days to coaching. He shares his passion with students of all ages and volunteers at a local senior center.

Recently, he and a partner won a gold medal at a regional pickleball tournament and a bronze at the Huntsman World Senior Games, a renowned event for athletes aged 50 and up. This year, they aim for gold again.

Robert’s story emphasizes the power of community and purpose. He mentions that in his past life, he had many viewers but few true friends. Now, his life is filled with close relationships and joy. Among his many interests, he reads two books weekly, learns about plants, and even studies AI online. He believes in the importance of setting goals at any age and is currently finishing a book he started two years ago.

Aging, for Robert, has been far different from what he expected. With the exception of arthritic hips, he feels as vibrant as ever. He starts each day with gratitude.
