SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — North Korea launched ballistic missiles on Monday, focusing on their ability to use cluster bomb warheads. This was the second such test in just a month, and it emphasizes North Korea’s goal of strengthening its defenses against the U.S. and South Korea.
State media reported that the launches occurred off North Korea’s east coast. Photos showed Kim Jong Un, alongside his daughter Kim Ju Ae, observing the test, both dressed in sleek black jackets.
According to the North’s announcement, the tests included five improved Hwasong-11 Ra missiles, designed to deliver cluster bombs and fragmentation mines. These missiles hit an island target, and Kim stated that the progress was crucial for enhancing military capabilities.
Earlier this month, North Korea had tested Hwasong-11 Ka missiles with similar warheads, claiming they could obliterate targets in a vast area.
Historically, North Korea has used cluster munitions, but the ongoing conflict involving Iran has heightened its urgency to showcase these weapons. During this conflict, cluster munitions have drawn attention for their destructive capacity; they explode at great heights, releasing multiple smaller bombs over large areas, making interception challenging.
Despite an international treaty banning cluster munitions, key countries—including North Korea, Iran, Israel, and the U.S.—have opted out.
