Celebrated chef Carlos Altamirano is bringing his culinary magic to San Francisco with a brand-new restaurant called Casa Sofia Kitchen and Bar. Located near Oracle Park at 701 Second St., this will be Altamirano’s ninth restaurant, adding to his impressive list of dining spots in the Bay Area.

The restaurant, named after his 10-year-old daughter Sofia, is set to open in mid-May, just in time for the summer baseball season. The space, formerly known as the Brixton, offers 120 seats in the main dining area and 52 in private spaces, perfect for gatherings.

While Altamirano kept details about the design under wraps, he did mention that the restaurant will feature vibrant hues of pink and green, lush plants, and striking murals. He collaborated with San Francisco designer Jon de la Cruz to create a lively atmosphere that blends Miami vibes with a touch of Las Vegas flair—“He’s a genius,” Altamirano noted.

Expect to see a menu rich in Peruvian and Latin American dishes. Signature items will include bold ceviches and baked empanadas, similar to what’s served in his other locations like Parada and Barranco. A standout dish Altamirano mentioned is an oven-roasted pork chop paired with yucca mousse and chimichurri butter, highlighting his commitment to fresh, seasonal ingredients.

Initially, Casa Sofia will serve dinner with plans to kick off lunch services during San Francisco Giants day games. The goal is to keep the restaurant lively and bustling during the stadium’s packed game nights.

The beverage selection will be equally impressive. Altamirano is bringing Yuri Chauca, a top bartender from his Half Moon Bay restaurant La Costanera. Chauca is known for his creative cocktails, including a unique chicha mule made with the Peruvian spirit, pisco.

This isn’t Altamirano’s first venture in SoMa; he opened his first restaurant, Mochica, in the area back in 2004. After relocating, he continued to expand his culinary offerings, including popular locations like Piqueos, La Costanera, and others throughout the Bay Area.

The name choice for Casa Sofia is particularly special. Sofia enjoys cooking, often helping her dad in the kitchen. When she heard her name would be on the restaurant’s sign and menu, she was ecstatic. Altamirano shared, “When I’m in the kitchen at home, she’s always next to me and wants to help me.”
