AV1 is stepping into the spotlight as an alternative to the widely used HEVC codec. It’s designed to tackle some of the confusion and challenges associated with HEVC, particularly around patent licensing. This codec was created by the Alliance for Open Media (AOMedia), which includes tech giants like Amazon, Apple, and Google. Launched in 2018, AV1 is royalty-free, meaning that companies can use it without paying fees. In 2023, AOMedia highlighted that AV1 is about 30% more efficient than HEVC, making it an appealing choice for content delivery.

Dr. Pierre-Anthony Lemieux, executive director of AOMedia, emphasizes that the combination of the royalty-free model and permissive licensing is aimed at enhancing media access for everyone. However, despite its advantages, AV1 has not gained as much traction in the market as expected. Many devices and platforms are still catching up, often due to compatibility issues.

HEVC made its debut in 2013, giving companies plenty of time to incorporate it. AV1, while promising, faces hurdles with hardware requirements. Its advanced compression algorithms do offer efficiency but usually demand more powerful devices. As of recent reports, Meta identified hardware decoding as a key challenge for AV1’s wider adoption.

Some hardware manufacturers hesitate to implement AV1 decoders because of the potential increase in production costs. This has been especially true for budget devices, such as certain smartphones and Blu-ray players, which often lack AV1 support. Software decoders present another option, but they can drain battery life and use more computing resources.

As of now, many streaming devices and smartphones are just starting to include hardware support for AV1. This often means they can only decode it partially, which might not meet user expectations for streaming quality. As the media landscape evolves, it will be interesting to see how AV1’s adoption progresses and whether it can overcome these current obstacles.

Notably, a recent survey found that about 40% of consumers are unaware of AV1 and its benefits. This highlights a significant opportunity for education within the tech community and consumer markets. As AV1 continues to develop, it may shape the future of video streaming and online media delivery.
