US Ambassador to India, Sergio Gor, recently highlighted the ongoing negotiations for a bilateral trade agreement between India and the United States. He confirmed that an Indian delegation is heading to Washington this week for important talks.
In a post on social media platform X, Gor expressed optimism, stating, “The Indian trade delegation will be arriving in Washington this week. A great step to finalize our bilateral trade deal. A win-win for both nations.”
This visit follows a recent discussion between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and US President Donald Trump, which has helped strengthen ties and give new energy to the negotiations. Darpan Jain, the Additional Secretary in the Department of Commerce, will lead the Indian team, joined by officials from customs and external affairs.
Earlier this year, the US Supreme Court invalidated broad tariffs imposed by Trump, setting a new flat tariff rate of 10% on imports from all nations for 150 days, starting February 24. These changes have prompted both countries to revisit previous agreements made in February, especially after a round of talks was postponed.
As part of the discussions, the Office of the United States Trade Representative has launched inquiries under Section 301, which India disputes, claiming the investigations lack a solid foundation.
Under the earlier agreement draft, the US had committed to reducing tariffs on Indian goods from 50% to 18% and removing an additional 25% duty linked to India’s purchases of Russian oil. In exchange, India suggested lowering or even eliminating tariffs on a range of American products, such as animal feed, nuts, fruits, and wine. India also plans to boost imports of energy, aircraft, and technology from the US over the next five years.
