The Transnational Centre for Just Transitions in Energy, Climate and Sustainability (TRAJECTS) is offering nine fully funded PhD scholarships for the academic years 2026 to 2030. This initiative focuses on promoting socially just transitions in energy, climate policy, and sustainability.

Successful applicants will start their studies in August 2026 and finish by July 2030. These scholarships will be held at universities in Germany, South Africa, and Colombia. This diverse setting encourages collaboration and knowledge sharing among researchers from different regions.

PhD candidates will be enrolled at one university but will receive guidance from various experts in the TRAJECTS network. This dual mentorship aims to provide a broad perspective and enhance research quality.

Research Areas

TRAJECTS encourages research that addresses critical climate and sustainability issues while ensuring equitable outcomes. Applicants can focus their proposals on several key areas, such as:

  • Climate Change Mitigation: Engaging in policy development, analyzing the economic impacts of energy transitions, and exploring ways to decrease fossil fuel use.
  • Renewable Energy Integration: Addressing topics like energy justice, circular economies in renewable technologies, and innovative hydrogen production.
  • Socio-Ecological Transitions: Focusing on urban development post-carbon, agroecology, and environmental conflicts tied to land use.

Applicants have the freedom to propose unique research ideas, blend various suggested topics, or pursue interdisciplinary approaches. Defining a specific geographical focus is also essential, with options including Colombia, South Africa, and neighboring regions.

Scholarship Benefits

This scholarship offers significant financial and academic support:

  • Monthly stipend ranging from €1,300 to €1,400, based on location.
  • Funding for research collaborations within the TRAJECTS network.
