Florida Rep. Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick Resigns Amid Allegations
Democratic Rep. Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick from Florida stepped down from Congress on Tuesday. This decision came just before the House Ethics Committee was about to assess whether she should face sanctions for serious allegations.
Cherfilus-McCormick is accused of misusing nearly $5 million in Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) funds for her campaign. She has denied these claims but was likely heading toward expulsion if she hadn’t resigned.
In her resignation statement, she expressed that the process wasn’t fair and highlighted her commitment to her community. “I choose to step away… to fight for my neighbors,” she stated.
Her resignation triggers a special election in Florida to fill her vacant seat. The chairman of the House Ethics Committee, Rep. Michael Guest, remarked that with her resignation, the committee has lost jurisdiction over her case, meaning there won’t be further sanctions.
Earlier, the Ethics Committee found “substantial evidence” supporting the allegations against her. Their report detailed inaccuracies in her campaign finance reports over several elections, mentioning false personal loans and improper contributions. It also claimed she used FEMA funds to buy luxury items like designer clothes and jewelry.
Last month, a rare public hearing was held where the committee found that most of the charges against her were proven true. Her lawyer, William Barzee, argued that the committee’s actions could jeopardize her right to a fair trial.
Cherfilus-McCormick’s federal trial has been postponed to February 2027. She expressed her eagerness to correct the record when legally allowed to do so.
Interestingly, just days before her resignation, she insisted she wouldn’t step down. However, the pressure was mounting as the committee prepared their recommendations.
House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries commented on her resignation, calling it the right move for her constituents. He also reiterated her right to the presumption of innocence until proven guilty.
House Speaker Mike Johnson noted it was unfortunate for the institution whenever a member faces such issues, hinting that her resignation was expected given the circumstances.
Cherfilus-McCormick is not the only lawmaker to resign recently due to allegations. Two other members, Rep. Eric Swalwell and Rep. Tony Gonzales, also stepped down last week, signaling a tense atmosphere in Congress.
