The parents of Sheridan Gorman are speaking out after the tragic loss of their daughter. Sheridan, a Loyola University freshman, was shot and killed in March during what authorities believe was a random act of violence. The alleged shooter, Jose Medina, is an undocumented immigrant from Venezuela.
Sheridan’s mother, Jessica Gorman, insists that it’s crucial to seek change for the safety of children. She expressed, “This can’t happen. We’ve got to make changes.” Her father, Thomas Gorman, echoed her sentiment, emphasizing that everyone should agree on prioritizing kids’ safety.
On the night of the incident, Sheridan was walking by Chicago’s lakefront with friends when a masked man approached and opened fire. Unfortunately, Sheridan, just 18 years old and from Yorktown, New York, lost her life at the scene.
Jose Medina, the suspect, was arrested days later. Records reveal that he had previously faced charges in Chicago but was released on bond, and later, he failed to appear in court. This raises significant concerns about the existing policies surrounding the legal processes for undocumented immigrants.
Medina has been charged with first-degree murder and is currently held without bond. His defense attorney described the situation as tragic, noting that Medina suffered severe head trauma as a teenager, affecting his mental capacity.
Jessica Gorman stated they are still grappling with what accountability looks like in this context, indicating that existing policies played a role in this calamity. “We can’t save Sheridan, but we can’t just do nothing,” she said.
