VHC Health is making strides on its new behavioral health facility on S. Carlin Springs Road. This project aims to create a center with 146 beds dedicated to both behavioral health and rehabilitation. A community meeting recently highlighted the timeline for development, which could lead to final decisions as soon as September.
Adrian Stanton, a vice president at VHC Health, mentioned that, if approved, the project could take 24 to 36 months to finish. The next step involves a couple of meetings to discuss site plans. These sessions will focus on any community concerns and lay out what the facility will look like.
There’s a significant need for mental health services in the area. Deborah Warren from the County’s Department of Human Services pointed out that one in four adults and one in seven youths struggle with mental health issues. With only 24 beds available statewide for adolescent care, this new facility could fill a vital gap in services.
Some locals have voiced concerns. Groups like Arlingtonians for Responsible Land Use have circulated a list of objections, suggesting a pause on current plans until further studies can be conducted on the site. Residents are keen to see thorough assessments and a fair planning process.
The new facility not only focuses on children and adolescents but also aims to engage the community throughout its development. County Board member Susan Cunningham emphasized that public input is crucial and that residents’ voices will shape the planning process.
Historically, this site has been used for medical purposes since the 1960s. Originally serving as a hospital, the land was acquired by the county in 2019 as part of a land-swap agreement with VHC Health. Now, as the project unfolds, community engagement is more vital than ever to ensure it meets local needs.
