Alabama’s football coach, Kalen DeBoer, recently signed a new seven-year contract that boosts his yearly salary to $12.5 million. This agreement also doubles his buyout if he leaves the team within the next three years, making him one of the top five highest-paid coaches in college football.
The University of Alabama System Board of Trustees approved the deal in a virtual meeting. It extends DeBoer’s contract to January 31, 2033. If he decides to leave before January 31, 2027, Alabama would owe him a hefty $10 million buyout. After that, the buyout decreases by $2 million each year, reaching $6 million if he were to leave before January 31, 2029. No buyout is needed if he leaves after that date.
Previously, under his original agreement, DeBoer’s buyout would have been $5 million for leaving before January 2027. That amount was set to decrease yearly, but the new contract significantly raises the stakes. The urgency for this deal started when DeBoer’s name appeared in connection with openings at other schools like Penn State and Michigan.
DeBoer expressed his excitement about the extension, saying, “This University has become a special place to us. I look forward to ensuring that Alabama football remains at the forefront of college football.” He acknowledged the rich tradition and history of success at Alabama and is eager to continue bringing championships to the school.
If Alabama were to fire DeBoer without cause, they would owe him 90% of his remaining salary—a similar clause from his previous contract. However, it’s worth noting that the new deal doesn’t require him to seek other jobs if he were let go, meaning Alabama would owe him that amount regardless of his next move.
DeBoer’s original contract had him earning $10.5 million in 2026. With this new deal, he joins the ranks of elite coaches like Georgia’s Kirby Smart and Ohio State’s Ryan Day, all earning at least $12.5 million a year.
Currently, DeBoer has a record of 20-8 over two seasons after taking the reins from Nick Saban. Last season, Alabama finished with an 11-4 record and made it to the College Football Playoff, where they beat Oklahoma but fell to Indiana in the quarterfinals.
Alabama athletic director Greg Byrne praised DeBoer, stating, “He is an excellent coach and has done a commendable job developing our student-athletes.”
Amid speculation about other job interests, DeBoer remained firm about his commitment to Alabama. He clarified that while he was aware of Michigan’s interest, he had no discussions with them. “I didn’t come here to follow coach Saban only to turn around after two years and go somewhere else,” he said. “I chose to be here. I love the support and our players.”
This commitment is significant as college football coaching contracts continue to evolve. According to a recent report from the NCAA, coaching salaries have increased by nearly 10% over the past five years. As the landscape of college football changes, having a steady and committed coach like DeBoer might be crucial for Alabama’s future success.
