Young People Arrested in Synagogue Attack Plot
Two young individuals were recently detained for allegedly planning an attack on a Texas synagogue. Authorities claim their intention was to drive through the congregation, aiming to “kill as many Jews as possible.”
This incident follows a separate assault just a month earlier. In that case, an armed man crashed his pickup truck into a Detroit-area synagogue. In response, synagogues worldwide have ramped up security to protect their worshippers, particularly after rising tensions due to U.S. and Israeli actions in Iran.
Angelina Han Hicks, an 18-year-old from Lexington, North Carolina, is now held in Davidson County jail with a hefty $10 million bond. She faces charges of conspiring with two unidentified men to commit murder and assault at Congregation Beth Israel in Houston, scheduled for April 21, 2028.
The FBI’s Charlotte office revealed that a juvenile also was arrested, charged with conspiracy to commit capital murder. This investigation began after a tip was received by a North Carolina law enforcement agency.
Judge Carlton Terry commented on the seriousness of the situation, expressing that Hicks’ release could endanger others by allowing potential communication with co-conspirators. Hicks’ defense attorney, Chad Freeman, indicated that they plan to involve several experts to investigate the case thoroughly.
Another recent attack heightened concerns for the Jewish community. Ayman Ghazali drove his truck into Temple Israel in West Bloomfield, Michigan, last month. Ghazali fired shots after breaking into a children’s area but ultimately took his own life. Remarkably, no one else was injured in this terrifying incident.
The Jewish Federation of Greater Houston took precautions by closing Congregation Beth Israel temporarily after they received credible threats. Fortunately, the campus reopened soon after.
The pattern of rising anti-Jewish violence is alarming. According to a recent study from the Anti-Defamation League, anti-Semitic incidents in the United States rose by 34% between 2020 and 2021. This troubling trend underscores the need for vigilance and support for vulnerable communities.
