The New Balance Indoor Grand Prix in Boston on Sunday was filled with thrilling performances. Distance runners Josh Hoey, Melissa Courtney-Bryant, and Andrew Coscoran shone brightly, while Olympic champions Julien Alfred, Rai Benjamin, and Grant Holloway began their seasons with strong wins.
This event, part of the World Athletics Indoor Tour Gold series, featured exciting races, especially in the distance events. Hoey, fresh off a record-setting performance, looked unstoppable in the men’s 1500m. He clocked an impressive 3:33.66, making it the fastest 1500m this year. This was nearly five seconds faster than his personal best, leaving Grant Fisher closely behind at 3:33.99. Both runners made it onto the North American indoor all-time list.
“It feels really great. It’s validating for all of the training we’ve done over the past couple of months,” Hoey shared, emphasizing his drive to maintain momentum throughout the season.
In the women’s 3000m, Great Britain’s Courtney-Bryant took the lead with a personal best of 8:28.69, securing the world lead for the season. She battled against Elise Cranny, who also set a personal record of 8:29.87.
Andrew Coscoran also made headlines in the men’s 3000m, achieving a major milestone. His finishing time of 7:30.75 set a new Irish indoor record, while behind him, Azeddine Habz ran a French indoor record of 7:31.50.
World indoor champion Bryce Hoppel easily won the 800m in 1:46.04, and Heather MacLean set a new meeting record in the mile, finishing in 4:23.32.
In the sprints, Olympic 100m champion Julien Alfred made a splash in her first race of the season. She won the 300m with a time of 36.16, a new Saint Lucian record. Rai Benjamin also made an impact, winning his 400m hurdles race with a smooth performance clocking in at 32.21.
In the men’s 60m final, Noah Lyles took the victory in 6.52. Meanwhile, Grant Holloway continued his winning streak in the 60m hurdles, finishing in 7.42. He has now remained unbeaten in this event for 11 years.
In a close contest in the women’s 60m final, Jaicious Sears triumphed with a time of 7.11, edging out Liberia’s Destiny Smith-Barnett and Celera Barnes, who both ran 7.14.
17-year-old Quincy Wilson set a new world U18 indoor record in the 400m, finishing at 45.66. Meanwhile, Raevyn Rogers won the 500m in 1:08.98, and Jasmine Moore took gold in the women’s triple jump with a leap of 13.89m.
