The Indian Railways has faced a fine of ₹60,000 due to filthy and unusable toilets on the Jammu Tawi to Bandra Terminus Special AC Train. This situation led to significant discomfort for passengers, particularly seniors.
In November 2023, a 72-year-old man named Surinder Kumar Munshi, traveling from Delhi to Bandra, encountered unsanitary conditions in the toilets of his AC-3 Tier coach. Despite his repeated complaints to the train staff at various stations—like Ambala and Mathura—nothing changed. Munshi reported that he suffered for over 24 hours without access to basic hygiene facilities.
Feeling ignored by the railway authorities, Munshi took his complaint to the Mohali Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission. He sought compensation for the distress caused. Fortunately, the Commission ruled in his favor, directing Indian Railways to pay him ₹30,000 for mental stress and legal costs. They were also instructed to contribute ₹15,000 to the Legal Aid Account and another ₹15,000 to the Tricity Consumer Courts Bar Association.
This case highlights a growing trend of dissatisfaction among passengers. A survey conducted by the Indian Railways revealed that nearly 60% of travelers reported issues with cleanliness on trains in the past year. Experts suggest that improving sanitation could significantly enhance the travel experience and customer satisfaction.
