ALLENTOWN, Pa. – This weekend, WFMZ-TV and Dorney Park aim to collect 10,000 pounds of food during their 10th annual Food Truck Food Drive. This initiative addresses a pressing need: while donations to Second Harvest are plentiful during the holiday season, keeping their shelves filled in spring and summer is a real challenge.
The Food Truck Drive has successfully mobilized community support for a decade. It’s a true team effort, with contributions from WFMZ-TV, corporate partners like GIANT, and Dorney Park itself. Ryan Eldredge, Dorney Park’s PR manager, says, “Our partnership with WFMZ and Second Harvest really stands out. We’re focused on ensuring families and children in our area are well-fed throughout the year.”
Second Harvest is seeking non-perishable items, particularly proteins such as canned meats and peanut butter. Donating is easy. Just drive to Dorney Park’s main entrance, and volunteers will help collect your contributions right from your trunk.
After donating, don’t miss the chance to explore the food trucks on site. A portion of their sales will also support Second Harvest. The park will be testing roller coasters this weekend, attracting crowds of kids and teens eager for fun. Eldredge highlights the importance of giving back, stating, “When we can support these kids both at home and in the park, it truly feels special.”
This event runs from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, making it a great chance to contribute to a worthy cause while enjoying some treats and activities with family.
Interestingly, food insecurity remains a growing issue. According to the USDA, around 10.5% of American households were food insecure in 2021. That number reflects a significant increase since the pandemic, showing the need for initiatives like this. Community-driven events not only fill emotional and physical needs but also build bonds that elevate local support networks. Every donation counts, helping to ensure that no child goes hungry.
With local businesses and community leaders stepping up, this Food Truck Food Drive highlights a powerful reminder: together, we can make a positive impact.
