In Iloilo City, a new government initiative called “Handog ng Pangulo: Luntiang Bukas” was launched to strengthen communities against climate change. The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) is spearheading this program.
DENR Secretary Juan Miguel Cuna emphasized that President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. wants to support climate-resilient housing and livelihood programs. The goal is to empower communities to thrive sustainably.
The initiative focuses on four key areas:
- Handog Titulo: Securing land ownership for families.
- Building homes that can withstand climate challenges.
- Creating spaces that foster development.
- Encouraging nature-based livelihoods.
“Today, we are proud to award 820 land patents in Western Visayas alone. This title is your security; it allows you to plan and invest for the future,” Cuna noted. These titles included 647 agricultural, 142 residential, and 31 special patents for farmers, residents, and institutions across the region.
Furthermore, the DENR distributed 5,000 seedlings as part of its Enhanced National Greening Program (ENGP). This initiative includes fruit-bearing trees like cacao and guava, which aim to enhance the livelihoods of community members while promoting environmental stewardship.
At the same event, DHSUD Secretary Jose Ramon Aliling and Iloilo City Mayor Raisa Treñas initiated the Batiano Village project, awarding certificates to 25 beneficiaries. The government also introduced two housing projects that feature eco-friendly designs. “These homes with cool roofs and rainwater harvesting systems offer real protection to families,” added Cuna.
Additionally, Iloilo City showcased its Linear Park Developments. Cuna praised these green spaces for their role in transforming urban life. “Linear parks cool our streets and provide safe areas for children to play,” he stated.
This program represents a vital step toward building a more resilient Philippines. According to the Global Climate Action Summit, communities actively engaged in climate resilience see a 50% improvement in their quality of life over five years. With a united effort, “Luntiang Bukas” aims to create sustainable futures for all Filipinos.
Cuna concluded by urging everyone to collaborate for a better tomorrow, with science-backed planning and a shared responsibility to protect the environment.
